Tens of thousands affected in Peru in worst snowfall in a decade – AOL Travel UK

Heavy snow in Peru has led to two people dying and 33,000 affected by the cold weather.

The BBC reports that President Ollanta Humala has travelled to badly hit Apurimac to oversee the distribution of aid.

One of the victims is a 75-year-old man who died when the roof of his house caved in under the weight of the snow.

According to Sky News, around a quarter of a million alpacas have died from the cold and starvation.

The government is doing what it can to feed the animals and prevent more deaths.

Southern Peru has seen more than a metre of snow in the past few days.

Rain and ice has caused the roads to become impassable.

According to AFP, Bolivia has also experienced heavy snowfall and had one snow-related death.

Two people have died in Paraguay from hyperthermia.

The number of deaths has reached eight in South America.
